CONTROL Resonant Resonants Boss Guide
Pattern epicenters, ability rewards, The Gap choices, and first-run limits.
Resonants are the skill tree you fight. In CONTROL Resonant, major powers do not drop from a passive board alone — they crystallize when you defeat Resonants, remnants of powerful people twisted by the Pattern. The campaign is still upcoming (24 September 2026 digital), so this guide explains the boss fantasy, the reward rules Remedy has stated, and how to plan without spoiling arenas that are not public yet.
Pair this with the combat guide for how abilities spend charge, the builds page for loadout theory, and Getting Started if you have not met The Gap yet.
What a Resonant is
Think of each Resonant as a Pattern epicenter: a boss-scale encounter that localizes the city’s infection into a person-shaped crisis. They sit above trash Hiss and Mold packs. Clearing one changes Dylan’s kit, not only the quest log. That design is why Resonant reads as an action RPG instead of a pure arena brawler.
Story-wise, Resonants matter because Dylan Faden is collecting answers about the Pattern while Jesse Faden remains missing as FBC Director. Zoe de Vera will radio context; she will not enter the arena as a second player. The game is single-player only.
Central Resonant (IGN First)
August 2026’s IGN First boss package shows a Central Resonant: a giant fiery Pattern epicenter that loves turning the floor into lava and spitting magma. It is the first named public arena, not a spoiler of the final boss. IGN also flagged that killing Resonants expands Dylan’s kit and can make the surrounding world harder — a reason not to treat every epicenter as a free skill shop.
Practical preview notes for that fight: stay airborne when lava claims the floor, use Heat / fire-leaning abilities if you already picked them in The Gap, and keep swinging so Power refills. There is still no block. See combat and the previews roundup. For dungeon routing before a boss gate, clear Metro Fault so Reach exists.
Ability rewards and the one-choice rule
When a Resonant falls, you enter The Gap — Dylan’s mind-space — and claim an ability reward. Preview messaging is consistent on a hard limit: on a first run, you cannot take every branch. One Resonant clear yields a meaningful choice, not a full pickup basket.
That rule is the entire mid-game tension. Two players can share a favorite Primary form and still diverge wildly after three bosses.
Gamescom example: Score Burst vs Growth
Hands-on coverage from gamescom documented a concrete fork: Score Burst versus Growth in a Mold-related context. You pick one direction for that reward lane. The example matters because it proves exclusivity is not marketing fog — it is a playable fork you will feel in later rooms.
Preview ability names
Remedy and preview builds have named powers such as:
- Barrage — offensive pressure burst.
- Seekers — tracking or pursuit-style hits.
- Shield — defensive bubble / mitigation tool.
- Heat Wave — wide heat damage or denial.
- Heat Aura — body-centered heat presence.
- Push — knockback / space creation.
- Ground Slam — vertical punish and stun-style reset.
- Score Burst / Growth — the documented Mold-facing fork above.
Names can shift in tuning patches; the structural lesson will not: abilities are boss-gated and mutually exclusive on run one.
Six slots: 3 + 3 swap
You equip six abilities arranged as two banks of three. Swap banks when the encounter family changes — for example, a Shield-heavy bank for a telegraph-dense Resonant phase, then a Barrage/Seekers bank for cleanup. Opening The Gap uses the preview control hold Down on the d-pad (see controls).
Do not fill all six with pure damage. Preview combat wants weapon swings to charge abilities; a kit with no defensive or displacement tool wastes the charge loop when a Patterning wave steals your footing. Read charge rules again in combat.
Respec with Spec Points
Mistakes are soften-able. Respec costs Spec Points. That means early experimental picks are allowed, but they are not free. Spend Spec Points when a region’s enemy mix clearly disagrees with your Gap board — not after every side conversation.
Spec Points are not a traversal skip currency. Movement gates stay on the story timeline; see traversal.
Prepare, then pick with hygiene
Confirm Flurry, Slash, or Slice comfort on the Aberrant forms tier list, pack Crush or Extend for arena reach, know which three-ability bank is live, warm perfect dodges on the prior trash pack, use hover/double jump when Anomalies appear, and listen to Zoe’s phase callouts.
After the kill, pick the power that fixes a weakness you already felt — not “whatever looks rarer.” Note the choice for NG+, and only spend Spec Points if the next story beat immediately disagrees.
New Game Plus: multi-ability from the same boss
NG+ is where exclusivity relaxes. Remedy’s messaging around carrying powers forward includes the ability to pursue additional rewards from Resonants you already beat, alongside carried Aberrant upgrades, talents, artifacts, and health. Traversal still does not carry — you will re-open Manhattan’s movement gates even with a stacked Gap board. NG+ also adds a fourth Artifact slot and harder enemies, which is the proper home for greedy multi-ability experiments.
Estimate context: ~30 hours core, ~50 hours completionist content across World Quests and collectibles. A Resonant-focused player should budget time for rematches and Gap theorycraft on the second cycle, not only for map painting.
Lead-in packs and post-launch scope
Hiss train dodge-to-punish, Mold trains area denial and Score Burst / Growth style forks, and Pattern / Patterning trains Shift inside warped geometry. If a boss feels illegible, you may have skipped a traversal verb two zones earlier — see traversal.
Arena scripts and cheese spots wait for launch patches. Until then, keep ability names tied to official or hands-on sources, and use builds plus the Guides hub for loadout math. Fight the epicenter, pick with intent, and leave The Gap before you over-optimize.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for launch week, pre-orders, and first-hour combat.
What are Resonants in CONTROL Resonant?
Boss-scale Pattern epicenters — remnants of powerful people twisted by the Pattern. Defeating them grants ability rewards in The Gap.
Can I unlock every ability on the first playthrough?
No. First-run Resonant rewards are exclusive choices. Respecs cost Spec Points, and NG+ is where you pursue additional powers from bosses you already cleared.
How many abilities can I equip?
Six total, as two banks of three you can swap. Open The Gap (hold Down on the d-pad in previews) to manage loadouts.
What was the gamescom ability choice example?
Coverage highlighted Score Burst versus Growth in a Mold-related reward fork — a concrete proof that branches exclude each other on a first run.
Do Resonant fights support multiplayer?
No. CONTROL Resonant is single-player only. Handler Zoe de Vera assists by radio, not as a second combatant.
